This character was listed on a website for having a horrible movie accent. I thought he did a good job-not 'horrible' at all. Supposedly, he received a lot of s*** for it from critics & viewers. How much better can you get: a white man imitating an asain. I can't think of anyone else doing this before him, for comparison value.

The Verve Chair by L

Now that Milan’s Furniture Fair 2008 has come and gone, the ripple effect is still being felt by a number of designer’s inspirational works of art which is fit for human habitations. Well, at least some of it is fit for human use. Among the plethora of origami shelves, uber modern matted grey sofas, and space-cadet lighting systems glimmered a simplistic chair that tittered on the line of precocious. Who am I kidding, John Sebastian’s Verve chair is astonishing.

No, I am not referencing the founder of “The Lovin’ Spoonful”. John Sebastian, a Danish designer (surprise surprise), who début the Verve chair at the Milan Fair, constructed this remarkable piece out of a single 6mm piece of Corian, utilizing thermoforming technology. Mind you, Corian, is generally used for cladding walls or countertops, and not as applicable when developing stellar seating. Mr. Sebastian proved otherwise. It is durable, stackable and pretty swank. It harps of Verner Panton most notable and iconic piece the Panton Chair (see below)while adding a clever twist and utility. It’s brilliant!

House of Holland by L

The strange thing about the House of Holland is its bombastic, yet pleasant merge of seemingly nonsense printed phrases on shirts that vaguely remind you of the early/mid 90’s, with vivid subject matter that made statement that you were simply indifferent to. Hell, you bought it because you thought it was cool. By utilizing vivid prints with statements like “ Flick Yer bean For Agyness Deyn” or “ Give Us A Blow Dais Lowe” you will inevertantly receive numerous inquires regarding the tee.

This may elicit as response from you (while embodying a pure sense of cleverly masked announce) “I simple love the shirt.” However, from time to time you will encounter a few well chosen enlighten individuals that will recognize that you are giving a nod to paramount, revolutionary and fresh creative individuals within the ever so capricious realm of fashion. Of course this is simultaneously done in a sharp tongue in cheek manner. You may not be wearing a tacky mundane logo, whose party of “high fashion” publicists has successful convinced you to be their unpaid product campaign.

The collection is divided into 3 subgroup (i.e. Fashion Groupies, One Trick Pony, and Stephanie & Axl) are playful, candy coated displays of brilliant simplicity that convey a sense of childish vitality and seemingly adult content. Henry Holland, the brain child of the mischievous apparel, set out to make uber hyper-hip tees that are utterly delightful and, again, simply brilliant. Who cares if it is super cool. In fact, it’s the point. Besides, 15 years from now when some disillusioned kid stumble on a few of these tees either in our closet or the thrift store rack, they will encounter an opportunity to venture into the the world in which we are so disparately attempting to define ourselves.

For some reason Kurt Cobain popped in my head today. Maybe it because i have flannel on. Maybe it's because I'm feeling quite "grungy". I'm not really sure. I do know that he was there. Moments later i had found some really great photos of him that I'm showing below along with a great video for Nirvana's song "In Bloom".

I also started to think about if he where still alive. Would he be still be making music? Would he of really quit his suffocating addictions? Would he and Courtney Love still be together? Or is the fact that his death, with out sounding horrible, more of an impact on our society?

I was 15 when he died, so I think it's interesting now at 28 that I'm seeing how much his music has influenced bands and such today. Anyway, I'm not trying to get really serious. I just wanted to pay a little tribute to someone that made a pretty big impact on me.

Lauren Nassef is a busy women. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001 she became a freelance illustrator. She has had many works published and such.

Hello Kitty. The cutest adult friendly kids toy character ever created. I personally wish I knew about her when I was a child. I loved cats. And of all the felines I collected, not one single one was a Hello Kitty or friends. Tthe first time I was introduced to her I cannot recall, but it may have been here in Maryland. There was an Asian showing me Chococat (even better than HK) whom I was mad about. I would buy these toys that I had absolutley no use for just 'cause she (HK) was cute. The coolest HK product I bought was a car air freshner. It plugged into yr vent and it was heart shaped with HK attached to a spring so she bounced in a way. $16. I was 19 years old. The scent was lovely, although I cannot descibe it-pardon my memory. Anyway, this photo is great. It'd be kooler if it was Kate Moss under there, but the model isn't skinny or short enough.

I woke up this morning, after being quite tipsy last nite and having sipped on my post dinner coffee from last nite I have quite the rush so it's a caffienated hangover. Does that make sense? I know I'll crash later more than likely, but that's okay-it's that kind of nite where it's gross outside and you just wanna stay inside...Bottle of wine, Netflix, and if yr roomate is home, may I beat you in a game of slap???

During my latest adventures with the Internet I found a website a rather amusing website that helped kill some time. It can be funny, offensive, sexy, curious, and very inspiring. LP Cover Lovers (you can find the link in the blog roll) has it all. There are sooooo many to look at. All sorts of different categories and styles. Gay, Lounge, Drugs, Soundtracks, Fashion, Truckers, Classical, and fun stuff I've never heard of before. Quite amazing. Below are some of my favorites.

I rented this documentary last week about one of the more infamous of Andy Warhol's Superstars, Brigid Berlin. "Pie in the Sky: The Brigid Berlin Story" was everything and more.

Brigid Berlin, also known as Brigit Polk, struggled with weight, money, drugs, and Andy much of her life. She was a regular staple at the Factory, an amazing Polaroid photographer, and a muse to Andy Warhol ("The Philosophy's of Andy Warhol: A to B and Back Again" has a whole section dedicated to a phone call they once had). So anyway, I don't really want to give much more of this amazing woman's life away. Rent the movie.

But I'm including a clip from Chelsea Girls, one of the many Andy film's she starred in the post above.

p.s. This is going to be one of many posts to come showcasing some of Andy's many Superstars.

For all of you Nine Inch Nails...

I don't know if anyone has heard the new album, Ghost, and instrumental double disc. I kind of gave up on them with the last 2 albums. I liked them upon first listen but after that i never listened to them again. Ghost is really good. Very ambient.

So there's this guy Jurg Lehni, and in 2006 he and scriptographer came across a new project (You Don't Matter). He had this plotting machine, and when he converted it in to a output device he found that it could draw, scratch, or cut in any traditional drawing utensil. The results where these interesting images looking neither drawn my hand or by a computer. To much data made it even better because of overloads (see below picture). On the website you can see more images and order merch.

Elizabeth Peyton is a American born (1965) painter whose best known for her paintings of celebrities, close friends, and the British Monarchy. Peyton mostly works with oil paint, but also draws and has started to do ecthings.

Peyton went to school in New York at The School of Visual Arts. She started showing art work out of a rented room at the famous Chelsea Hotel in the 80's, where a gallery owner stopped by, and well you get the idea. In 2006 a portrait of John Lennon sold for around $800,000. She has been credited for the revival of portrait paintings in a time (the 90's) where most critics and artists had called the form "dead". Peyton has shown now in many exhibitions and has permanent pieces at galleries such as The Guggenheim and The Museum of Modern Art (both in New York) and at other galleries in Europe.

Some of the celebrities Peyton has painted are David Bowie, Kieth Richards, Julian Casablancas, Jarvis Cocker, Graham Coxon, Chloe Sevigny, Kurt Cobain, Prince William and Harry, Pete Doherty, and John Lennon.

School just isn't for anyone. Bernie Reid, a London based and Edinburgh-Born (Scotland's for me!), is proof of that. Reid is all self-taught. Luck probably has something to do with it along with knowing the right people. It' always about who you know.

Reid's work is mostly stencil work with spray paint, but has started to include mixed media collage with them. He got his break when I-D Magazine positively reviewed a collaboration he did with stylist and fashion designer, Beca Lipscombe, and photographer, Andy Shaw. Since then he has worked with such clients as Stella McCartney, Dazed & Confused Magazine, Boxfresh, and many others. He has done many portraits of celebrities and musicians and graphic work for albums. Reid has also just started his own series of wall papers (pic below).

I’ve been a fan of The Smoking Gun website for a number of years. It has an updated mug shot collection, mostly of famous people. And recently, it’s been grouping mugshots together in archive updates that show tons of people with weird hairstyles one day, or Mickey Mouse shirts the next.

I always considered mug shots a kind of artwork. Found art perhaps. It’s an interesting slice of time… and sanity/insanity.

I looked into it and graphic designer Mark Michaelson has put together a book of found mugshots from his largely eclectic collection. The coffee table book is called Least Wanted: A Century of American Mugshots. The book came out in early 2007. You can buy it on Amazon. And Michaelson did an interview with Smithsonian about it during that time too.

Some people agree with using art to promote politics, and some don’t. You can talk amongst yourselves how you feel about this one.

A female Yale art major, Aliza Shvarts is unveiling her senior art project soon, a study of a nine-month process of her continually artificially inseminating herself while taking herbal pills to induce miscarriages.

She doesn’t say how many times she inseminated herself and doesn’t care what the process has or will do to her body.

The exhibition is video recordings of her miscarriages… and blood samples from them.

It’s definitely raising debate on the Yale campus.


“The display of Schvarts' project will feature a large cube suspended from the ceiling of a room in the gallery of Green Hall. Schvarts will wrap hundreds of feet of plastic sheeting around this cube; lined between layers of the sheeting will be the blood from Schvarts' self-induced miscarriages mixed with Vaseline in order to prevent the blood from drying and to extend the blood throughout the plastic sheeting.


“Schvarts will then project recorded videos onto the four sides of the cube. These videos, captured on a VHS camcorder, will show her experiencing miscarriages in her bathrooom tub, she said. Similar videos will be projected onto the walls of the room.”

As conceptual art, I think it’s brilliant. Of course you may disagree. The exhibit will be on display April 22 to May 1 at Yale.

LET'S TALK ABOUT MONEY posted by J

There is way to much to say about Damien Hirst, so i will just be talking about 2 of his most famous pieces.

The First is "The Physical Impossibility Of Death In The Mind Of Someone Living". This Piece, a 14 foot long tiger shark immersed in a vitrine of formaldehyde, was the second most expensive piece of art sold by a living artist at the time. Whoa! Some people don't consider this art. I rather enjoy it. Completely unique and groundbreaking if you ask me. Brand new. Hirst has also done other likes this with cows and sheep.

The second piece i am showcasing is "For The Love Of God". A life size human skull recreated in platinum covered in 8,601 diamonds totalling in at 1,106.18 carats. A girl's best friend? Strangely though it does have real human teeth. I need not say anymore about it and its beauty, except that it sold for $100 million dollars.

"Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel" is the second album from the incredibly talented Bradford Cox. Atlas Sound is the solo effort from Cox who is the lead singer of Deerhunter.

I've been reading about the album since it came out in February which lead me to check out his myspace page(www.myspace.com/bradfordcox). Upon here the first song i was completely hooked. Shoe gaze guitars and ambient electronics, subdued drums and ghostly vocals, all are some of my favorite qualities in music.

Speaking of the vocals, they where all created while recording on the first take. Two of my favorite tracks are "Recent Bedroom" and "Quarantined". As with most ambient-esque music (and most music in general when i think about it) the listening experience can be further enjoyed with headphones. So get the album, get out your headphones, turn down the lights, and lie down in your bed and LISTEN!
